Victorian Flatbush House Tour 2013

Flatbush Development Corporation
announces the 2013 date for its highly heralded Victorian Flatbush House Tour — an event that entices hundreds of
visitors and residents to explore the majesty of historic Flatbush.  Tour participants are afforded a rare
opportunity to view the interiors of the neighborhood’s marvelous homes,
celebrating the skilled workmanship and architecture of the past.  The tour will take place on Sunday, June 9 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The ticket price is $20 in advance and $25 on the day of tour. The tour will continue rain
or shine, and a tour bus is available for transport between the houses, though
you can also walk or bike.  To order
tickets, email victoriantour@fdconline.org.

Originally designed and developed
around 1900 as “a piece of suburban life just minutes from Manhattan,” the homes and neighborhoods that
make up Victorian Flatbush still maintain a small town feel and
atmosphere.  With its wide, tree-lined
streets, stately homes, spacious yards, and welcoming front porches, Victorian
Flatbush is more reminiscent of relaxed country-living as opposed to its
location at the center of bustling Brooklyn.

These homes exhibit a wide range of
architectural styles, from Colonial Revival to Tudor to Greek Revival.  While most interiors have been carefully

restored to honor their original designs, others have been renovated with a

modern design sensibility, producing an exciting mix of classic and
contemporary styles.  In addition to the
unique architectural details, the original homeowners and residents weave
stories of history and intrigue into the neighborhoods.  Some of New
York City’s most elite families have ties to our
neighborhoods, including the Vanderbilts, the Carnegies, the Gillettes, and the
Guggenheims.

The tour will include a mid-point rest stop with
refreshments and in
conjunction “Art and Craft In The
Garden,”
will be present featuring a hand-picked selection of accomplished
artisans.  Their work is diverse and beautiful, ranging from fine art to
contemporary jewelry, hand-constructed men’s and women’s clothing and hats,
scarves and handmade wooden toys.

Of Flatbush’s many annual events,
The House Tour is one of the community’s most popular.  Come out and join in the celebration of
Flatbush’s rich cultural history, and support the FDC programs that help the community
thrive.
