Heifer is absolutely INCREDIBLE. I've been "using" them for years in the sense of buying…Read More gifts for friends and family--you can buy part or all of an animal (for as cheap as $20 to as much as you can afford) in honor of your friend and it means that someone who needs the animal for their survival is actually getting the animal. And then if I feel like my friend might want something tangible, I might buy them a candle (if I've gotten a hive of bees) or a dozen eggs (if I bought a chicken) or a nice piece of goat cheese (if I bought part of a goat). But it's truly amazing how many people they've helped around the world to be able to support themselves with the animals, and then they have to "pass along the gift"--when their animal has an offspring, it's formally and ceremoniously handed along to another person in the community, and on and on through the generations. Sweet, eh?
