BROOKLYN, NEW YORK – New York City Council Member Jumaane D. Williams today announced his full-fledged support and endorsement of State Committeewoman and District Leader Rodneyse Bichotte in her campaign to seek election to the 42nd Assembly District this fall.  As the first endorsement in the Bichotte for Assembly campaign, Williams, who currently serves as Deputy Leader of the New York City Council and chair of the council’s Committee on Housing and Buildings, is establishing that Bichotte is strongly supported by local leaders.

"I am proud to endorse my friend Rodneyse Bichotte for the Assembly," stated Council Member Williams.  "The good book tells us that to everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under Heaven.  We are now in the beginning of a new season of government; a new generation will take the baton of governing and build upon the unfinished work of our predecessors.  There are many new active community members who are answering the call to public service and I'm proud to count myself among them.  I can honestly tell the voters of the 42nd Assembly District that there is no one candidate more qualified or more committed to improving this community than Rodneyse Bichotte.

We need new energy and new ideas in Albany to address the legislative and budgetary challenges of this new age.  We need citizen activists who will embark upon the New York State Thruway every Monday with only our best hopes and aspirations in mind; and return every Friday with the resources that the communities of Midwood, Flatbush and East Flatbush desperately need.  We need someone who will work in Albany every day to address the issues of affordable housing, economic development, education reform and healthcare access.  Someone who will stand strong against part of the Republican agenda in Albany; someone who will stand with me and fight to ensure that the future of this community is secure so that our seniors, our working families, our small business owners and our youth receive their fair share.

Brooklyn has a long history of sending strong, intelligent women to the legislature to accomplish the hard work of governing.  And as the son of a strong, intelligent woman, I believe that we should perhaps be sending more women than men into government because some of the men currently there haven't quite measured up.  In 1964, Kings County was progressive enough and smart enough to elect Shirley Chisholm to the New York State Assembly.  And no one can question the impact she had as a trailblazer whose legacy as a legislator and Presidential candidate opened doors for generations of women and men.  In 1978, Kings County was progressive enough and smart enough to send another woman to Albany.  Her name is Rhoda Jacobs, and she too has been a trailblazer and strong representative for our community.  As the time has come to elect someone else to take the mantle of leadership in the 42nd Assembly seat, I can think of no candidate more qualified than someone who helped found the Shirley Chisholm Democratic Club in an effort to carry on the 'unbought & unbossed' spirit.  That person is Rodneyse Bichotte.

I will be working hard this summer to assist Rodneyse in this election and bring her message to the voters. I strongly urge all of my supporters to join me as we work to send her to Albany. If you believe in progressive government that really works for the people, then vote for Rodneyse Bichotte this September."

“I am extremely excited and grateful to have Council Member Jumaane D. Williams, a friend and an ally, and the first elected to emphatically endorse my candidacy for State Assembly,” said Bichotte.  “Council Member Williams and I have worked tirelessly representing our community to bring back much needed resources and to be a voice to those who need to be signified. These issues include the installment of the Select Bus Service on the B44, advocating against illegitimate hotels, promoting affordable housing, and providing legal aid for Temporary Protected Status to Haitians affected by the 2010 Haiti earthquake living in New York City.  His progressive leadership in championing the Community Safety Act is unmatched. I look forward to a City and State partnership with Council Member Williams.”

As the current District Leader, Rodneyse Bichotte has been outspoken on issues concerning immigration, unemployment, education reform, health care access, senior citizen centers, affordable housing and other issues affecting the quality of life in the community.
