Monday Morning Subway Commute: Crowded But Doable

Subway service won’t be back to normal Monday morning. But commuting to Manhattan by train will be doable.

With the addition of partial service of the Q and D and Franklin Avenue Shuttle trains Sunday morning and F and J train service to Manhattan, most people will be able to make their way to Manhattan by train using a few connections.

However, at a press conference Sunday, officials warneded straphangers that subway service won’t be back to normal Monday.

There will be fewer trains than usual, and more people riding them due to the gas shortage, said MTA chairman Joseph Lhota, who suggested that people try to stagger their schedules to avoid the height of rush hour.

“We are in unchartered territory,” he said. “We ask everybody to be understanding.”

So leave extra time, and be prepared to stand. But if you need to take the train into Manhattan Monday. You should be able to do it.

Here is an updated list of available train service as of 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4. For the most up-to-date information, see the MTA website:


Service has been fully restored on the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, D, trains and the Franklin Avenue and 42nd Street shuttles. It has been restored on the F train except for a few closed stations (see below).

Service is still suspended on the B, C, E, G, Z, and Rockaway Shuttle trains.

Service has been partially restored on the following lines:

1 trains are running between the Van Cortlandt Park-242 Street Station and the 14 Street Station in both directions.

A trains operate in two sections: Between 168 Street (Manhattan) and 34 Street-Penn Station, making all local stops and between Jay Street-MetroTech and Lefferts Blvd, making all local stops. For service to and from Manhattan, shuttle bus connections are still available at Jay Street-MetroTech. There is no service to and from Aqueduct and the Rockaways.

F trains are operating between 179 Street (Queens) and Avenue X (Brooklyn) with the following stations are closed: Queens Plaza, Court Square-23 Street, Lexington Avenue/53 Street and 5 Avenue/53 Street.

M trains operate in two sections: Between Myrtle Avenue-Broadway and Metropolitan Avenue and Between Parsons-Archer and 34 Street-Herald Square making F train stops between 71 Avenue-Forest Hills and 34 Street-Herald Square. There is no M train service in Manhattan south of 34 Street, and the following train stations are closed: Queens Plaza, Court Square-23 Street, Lexington Avenue/53 Street, and 5 Avenue/53 Street.

J trains operate between Jamaica Center and Essex Street, making all local stops.

L trains operate between Broadway Junction and Rockaway Parkway, making all local stops.

N trains operate between Ditmars Blvd (Queens) and 34 Street-Herald Square Station, making all local stops.  there is no N, Q or Rservice in Manhattan south of 34 Street.  (Also northbound N trains skip 49th St.)

Q trains run Manhattan-bound between the Kings Highway Station and Jay Street-MetroTech in both directions (updated 11/4 6 p.m.)

R trains trains operate in Brooklyn between Jay Street-MetroTech and 95 Street, making all local stops. R Train service along Queens Blvd is suspended.

S The Franklin Avenue and 42nd street shuttles are running. The Rockaway Park shuttle is suspended.
