Williams previously appointed Pierre to Community Board 14 for his service to the community. He noted that as a district leader, Pierre will continue to pull more residents into the political process.

"I am honored to have Councilmember Jumaane Williams' endorsement," Pierre said in a statement. "His progressive initiatives such as the Participatory Budget process, as well as his stance on various issues, the need to increase our state's minimum wage and the need to reform New York City's 'Stop & Frisk' policies are very much in line with my own. Our districts have common needs and interests. I look forward to working with Council Member Williams."

New York State's Democratic Primary is scheduled for Thursday, September 13, 2012 instead of the traditional Tuesday in observance of September 11.
