Give or Get Help With 'NYC Build It Back'

Program designed to help those still struggling after last year's storm.

On Monday, Mayor Michael Bloomberg unveiled New York City's newest initiative designed to help those still struggling to recovery from the devastating impact of Superstorm Sandy.

Bloomberg announced NYC Build It Back, a program made possible through federal grants that helps homeowners with Sandy repairs and preventative measures for future storms.

Residents, both renters and owners, can apply for the program, put together the necessary paperwork and then consult with a housing recovery specialist to determine their areas of greatest need.

"Through NYC Build it Back, we are making our federal aid package simple and understandable, and tailoring assistance to the specific needs of the families and businesses most impacted by Sandy," Bloomberg said Monday. "Whether it’s personal assistance in the rebuilding process or reimbursements for completed repairs, this program will provide a new infusion of support to help families, neighborhoods and businesses come back stronger and more resilient than ever before."

The program isn't just for those looking to rebuild for themselves. It also represents a volunteer opportunity for those who want to chip in and help storm-ravaged parts of the city rebuild.

Residents are encouraged to visit the program's website, where they can register to help.

The program is funded in part by $648 million in federal dollars earmarked for storm relief and repair. Reimbursements and repair payments will be portioned out on a needs-based system.
