Elected Officials React to Re-Inauguration of Obama

Local pols note the day would go down in history as a momentous event for the country.

 

Local elected officials reacted favorably to the re-inauguration of President Barack Obama, saying the day would go down in history as a momentous event for the country. 

Councilman Jumaane Williams, D-45, reflected on the ocassion taking place on the 27th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

"As we take part in one of our nation's greatest traditions, we look forward to the next four years and the progressive agenda that President Obama outlined for us on the Capitol," Williams said. "We are sending the President back to the White House just as we are committing ourselves to be active in the struggle for our country's future." 

He noted that King understood it took agitation to combat injustice and that "desire to agitate for a more equal society lives on and waits for more of us to join the cause."

Rep. Yvette Clarke, D-9, also noted the day was a symbolic moment in history, saying, "President Obama’s inaugural address echoed a call of action for all Americans to work together in order for our nation to move forward."

“We are indeed ‘one nation and one people,’" she continued. "Let us never forget the adversities we have overcome as a nation and put aside our differences to build a better society for future generations. We have the responsibility to set the example and to honor the dream of the late Dr. King."

Clarke said she is looking forward to working alongside the Obama administration, her colleagues and fellow Americans to address the nation's priorities, including climate change, gun control, healthcare, strengthening the economy, education and immigration reform.
