City Council Approves Living Wage Bill, Mayor Has Vowed to Veto

Most councilmembers support the bill, which would mandate a minimum pay for employers receiving public funding.

The City Council voted 45-5 on Monday to approve its living wage bill, though Mayor Michael Bloomberg still says that he will veto it when it comes across his desk, reports NY1.

As Patch has previously reported, the bill would mandate minimum pay of $10 per hour with benefits or $11.50 per hour without benefits, for employers receiving public funding with gross revenues over $5 million dollars a year.

"We live in city where the gap between the rich and poor has widened more than any other city," Councilman Charles Barron, D-East New York— for Rep. Edolphus Town’s —told NY1.

The article says that while City Council should have enough votes to override the mayor's veto, Bloomberg has also promised a legal challenge, which could tie the bill up in court for months.

Folks need to remember that City Council Speaker and Mayoral wannabe Christine Quinn is fighting the passage of the living wage bill. Folks must remember that when Quinn runs for Mayor next year. Folks also need to know that BedStuy's Councilmember Al Vann has been bringing Quinn into BedStuy alot lately. Vann regularly includes Quinn's photo in his quarterly newsletters. Vann who is term-limited in 2013, has taken to legitimizing Quinn in exchange for a City Commissionership if Quinn is elected. BedStuy needs to just say NO to Quinn as Mayor & to reject Vann's presence in their midst for having done nothing in years to help BedStuy.

Quinn always a big fighter for gay rights is getting married thats a first to have anyone in goverment OPENLY GAY and in a GAY marriage., though notthe 1st gay mayor ,yes she plans 2 run 4 mayor. I cant see that she would veto a raise for workers minum wages. But I deffiently do see that horror BLOOMBERG saying no raise and yes 2 landlords 2 raise rents more & get rid of stableization & rent control. He was soon as he got into office anti everyday people/workers Pro fat cats its a bizness 2 him NYC..but its hard 2 imagine QUINN being against it who knows we will see when Bloomies rein of terror is over who else is running Personally I say bring back ELLIOT SPITZER! who cares about a call girl, he used his own money. and not during working hours WHO CARES! REALLY? does it effect his ability to be a great politican? I dont think so. I dont care about call girls I care about where I live in my city/state! He is very pro people & against goverment ignoring the now underclass & corps stealing he was a great D.A. SPITZER CUMO & SHUMMER that would be GREAT, just thinking...
