Funeral Set For Ditmas Park Woman Who Died in Police Custody

Kyam Livingston, 37, died in a crowded jail cell after calling for help for hours.

The funeral for 37-year-old Kyam Livingston, who died in police custody over the weekend, will be held Monday.

Livingston was arrested just after 1 a.m. Saturday, July 20, for violating a restraining order. She was taken to the hospital for what appeared to be intoxication but was released later that morning, according to police.

Saturday afternoon, while in a cell at Central Booking, she started getting stomach pains and diarrhea. Livingston's condition grew worse overnight, leading to the other inmates to lay her down on the bench and beg the guards for help in vein, a woman in Livingston's cell said.

Livingston went into convulsions and died the following morning, at around 6:20 a.m., 20 minutes before an ambulance arrived, the witness said.

The initial autopsy was inconclusive. They are conducting additional tests, which usually take 6 to 8 weeks, a spokeswoman for the city's Medical Examiner's Office said.

The Brooklyn D.A.'s office is also investigating the death, a spokesman said.

The funeral will take place on Monday, July 29, at R. Steven LeGall Home for Funerals, 169 Empire Blvd., between Bedford and Rogers avenues, (718) 722-7800. The viewing will take place from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by the service, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The funeral is open to all who wish to pay their respects.
