We Love You, Velda Louison

Velda Louison has been watching over the corner of Cortelyou and Argyle, rain, shine, snow or sleet since March 1980. Who knows how many lives have been saved by her eagle eyes - and the quick whistle - she is a presence that cannot be missed.

Ms Louison resides at 1206 Cortelyou Road, between the firehouse and Cinco de Mayo, the building they bought the same year she started as a crossing guard, where her children were raised, and grandchildren visit, so when you don't see her on the corner, she's probably sweeping the sidewalk or watering plants.

There is something truly lovely seeing her walk our neighbors' kids across, having walked the same neighbors when they were kids, across the same corner, to the same school. Her dedication, caring, and wonderful attitude towards kids, parents, and motorists alike is incredible ... Velda Louison is a gem to be celebrated and thanked daily, and we could not think of a better Valentine this year.
