Newkirk Plaza Beautification on the Way

It may not look like much now, but that little box attached to the fence on Newkirk Plaza is a sign that the end of construction is in sight. This week, Newkirk Plaza merchants, along with Granite Construction and the Flatbush Development Corporation (FDC), tested out the height for about 14 flower boxes, which will be mounted to the fence on either side of the subway.

In addition to the flower boxes, tree planters, benches, trash cans, and bike racks will be put in place as soon as the brick-laying is complete, which is getting very close. Robin Redmond, executive director for the FDC, says they hope to have a festival in the fall to celebrate the completion of construction and the newly redesigned plaza.

"Newkirk Plaza has the potential to be more than just commuter traffic," she says.

There's still a lot to be done, but it seems like this project, plus the success of the Ox Cart Tavern and Rancho Alegre and the addition of soon-to-open Whisk all on Newkirk Ave, and the new sandwich shop coming to the Plaza, is pointing to a Newkirk that is getting beyond its "Newcrack" past.
