Newkirk Cares Collaborative, a community intiative to improve the Newkirk Avenue corridor, has turned to fundraising website Kickstarter to raise money to complete a mosaic in the Newkirk Plaza tunnel.
The group needs approximately $1000 to complete the mosaic, which was started this summer.
"The space is now brighter, happier and more beautiful than before but the work has not been completed," the group's Kickstarter page says. "There is is still one stark, blank wall that needs help."
The website notes that phase two fo the project will be driven by the mosiac work fo Carlos Pinto of the Brooklyn Recycle Project and the painting of Susan Jaramillo, who created the mural on the opposite wall of the passageway. "The new work will continue in theme of dreams from the first mural, this time focusing on uplifting imagery of flying machines," it says.
Donations will go to supplies to pay for mosaic materials such as glue and cement, paint for the mural and for food to feed volunteers. "All of the mosaic materials such as ceramics and glass are recycled and are acquired at no cost," the site says.
At of Wednesday, Oct. 24, $577 of the $1000 goal had been pledged, with 30 days to go.
