Is "New York, NY" a problem for NYC as a whole?

Is "New York, NY" a problem for NYC as a whole?

Yesterday, Trulia posted a "report" on buying vs. renting in various cities, and it "found" that New York City has the highest ratio of purchase price to rental price.

Problem is - and, granted, this is an extremely unscientific report based entirely on Trulia listings - it's pretty clear they, like most people outside NYC, think that "New York, NY" means New York City rather than Manhattan. The median price for apts/coops/houses in all of NYC cannot possibly be $1.3-1.4 million.

I'm fairly sure that most people don't base their decision to buy on Trulia.com, but isn't this a larger problem than it seems? Isn't it time that the other four boroughs stop getting a bad rap for the things that only suck about Manhattan? Or does it not matter in the least? Now that the media has "discovered" Brooklyn and the other boroughs, maybe it's time to consider a change to "Manhattan, NY" - for clarity's sake. Even better, maybe all the boroughs should start using more specific addresses like Queens does - Astoria, NY; Woodside, NY; Long Island City, NY. Ditmas Park, NY?

I know, I know. It'll never happen. But you'd think Manhattanites would jump at the chance to dissociate themselves from us outlanders.

Speaking of, anyone know why Manhattan stayed "New York, NY"? I suspect it has something to do with the 5 boroughs originally being separate municipalities.
