Help Those Displaced by Fire

A fire over the weekend at 346 East 29th Street in East Flatbush left one woman dead and several residents and firefighters injured. The top three floors of the building were heavily damaged after the roof caved in, and the lower floors were only safe enough for residents to return to retrieve belongings, but even those floors are in bad shape. It's unknown if tenants on the lower floors will be able to return to their homes to sleep any time soon.

The office of City Council Member Jumaane D. Williams, who represents the area that includes 346 East 29th, tells us that there will be a meeting with residents tomorrow evening, Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 7pm at St. Jerome's Church, 2900 Newkirk Avenue near Nostrand Ave. You can help our neighbors by bringing things of practical need to the church, items like new socks and underwear, winter clothing, toothbrushes or other common personal hygeine products. You might also consider making a donation to the Red Cross, which arranged housing for 15 families after this fire.
