Each year my office celebrates Black History Month with recognizing the accomplishments of African-Americans throughout our history. Black History Month is a time to learn, honor and celebrate the achievements of black men and women throughout history.
Last year I was very proud to announce a Proclamation between my Office and Medgar Evers College outlining our plans to hold an annual symposium addressing the impact of race and the law on society to take place every February coinciding with Black History Month. The ultimate goal of this collaboration is aimed at keeping the community informed about significant issues that impact our community and particularly our young people.
This year I am proud to announce that in collaboration with Medgar Evers College we will be presenting a symposium on race, law and justice entitled “Strategies for closing the school-to-prison pipeline.”
This symposium will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Friday, February 15, 2013, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at Medgar Evers College located at 1150 Carroll Street.
Nationally recognized educators, academics, prosecutors, social workers, judges, and faith leaders, along with local parents and students will discuss public policy, criminal justice, and our society.
At the forefront of this issue both nationally and in New York, the Honorable Judith Kaye, former Chief Judge of the State of New York; Chair, New York State Permanent Judicial Commission on Justice for Children, will deliver the keynote address on Thursday, February 14th.
Also, New York City School Chancellor Dennis Walcott will present the keynote address on Friday, February 15th.
