Celebrate Haitian History and Culture in Prospect Park

Come to Prospect Park today to celebrate the Haitian Revolution with an all-day festival fine arts, drumming, traditional Haitian Folklore, dance and storytelling.

Now in its 23rd year, the Bwa Kay Iman Celebration takes place on the South end of Prospect Park, by the wooden cabin at the Parkside entrance.

The event  commemorates Bwa Kay Iman, a gathering of Haitian slaves on August 14, 1791 that began the Haitian Revolution.   

Organizers of the event are hoping people from all backgrounds come.

"We are reaching out to everyone in the community of all age groups and cultures to partake in this great annual celebration," an organizer wrote in the event description posted on Prospect Height Patch. 

She added that the "hands-on workshops" will create "an opportunity for Haitians to reconnect with their culture and for the general community to learn about Haiti’s culture."

A few notes:

- Dress modestly for this event, which has a spiritual component: "no shorts, cleavage etc" an organizer wrote.
