[VIDEO] Getting to Know the Ditmas Park Artists

Watch and read about some of the artists involved in this year's Flatbush Artists Studio Tour.

Local artists have come together to organize this year's , giving those interested a chance to step into the studio and watch the creative process unfold. 

Although Eric Pesso is known in Ditmas Park for his abstract wood sculptures, he didn't always consider himself an artist. 

"I really had no interest in art," Pesso said. "But one day I saw something and it just clicked."

After that day, he began to study under established artists and take classes at Brooklyn College to perfect his art, which evolved into carving wooden sculptures.

"I just have an affinity for wood," he mused. "I don't know why."

"I start with large logs, cross sections of big oak trees, straight sections of local woods," he said. 

Pesso typically works on two pieces simultaneously, taking about a year to complete the two. "It takes forever," he said, noting that he works full time with computers. "I [usually] start on one in early June and won't finish it until winter."

This is Pesso's first year on the tour, and he said that his goals for the tour are two-fold. "For me, I'm not really selling these pieces," he said. "It gives me a rush to just get a positive reaction. For the group, the neighborhood, I hope it becomes known as a place of art." 

Tours will take place on Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20 from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Pesso's work will be shown at 297 Argyle Road.
