Ditmas Park to Participate in Bike to Work Day

As part of New York City's 9th annual Bike Month, the city, including Ditmas Park, is celebrating "Bike to Work Day" Friday, May 18. 

Ditmas Park residents can come together to travel to work by bike, an even that is both social and healthy, according to Julie May, the organizer of the Ditmas Park leg of the trip. 

"I ride to work everyday," May said, noting that she usually travels with coworkers.

"This is a big, city-wide effort to get some people out riding. We'll be with a group, so we'll be more visible and go slower. For people new to riding, it's a welcoming learning experience."

May noted the group will meet at 7:30 a.m. starting on Cortelyou Road at Argyle Road and head to Prospect Park. "We'll go up the hill and around slightly to exist at Grand Army Plaza," she said. "That hill is unavoidable." 

Then, the group will take Union Street to 5th Avenue and continue up the avenue until Bergen Street where they will make a left and ride all the way to Court Street. The group will then make its way to the Brooklyn Historical Society's landmark building at the corner of Pierrepont Street. 

"If there is coffee at Borough Hall with Marty Markowitz we'll detour there for a few minutes," she said. 

May will be tweeting at every stoplight from her personal twitter handle, @ginjula, to keep others informed of the bicyclists' location. 

She also noted that the League of American Cyclists will also have stations set up on the Brooklyn Bridge where bicyclists will be able to buy head lights, tail lights and ensure their bike is legal to be ridden on the streets.
