ArtSpace #8: Breukellen Riesgo

Today's contributor was born (or at least named) to live here. Also, while this is her first ArtSpace post, her work's been featured on the blog before and she's made some nice contributions to our Flickr group. So poke around there a bit after checking out Street Feast below:

Weekly theme: debris

Artist: Breukellen Riesgo

Street Feast includes: "Popcorn," "Mango," "Drink," "Egg," and "Cup."

How does living in Ditmas Park feed/inspire/affect your work?

My work is documentary style, and Ditmas Park is not only a naturally beautiful place to document, but it's also going through a change. Not menopause--more like puberty. Whatever is happening in our neighborhood has an electric feel, and it's exciting to capture the transition with my camera. Also, Ditmas Park is full of beautiful people (yeah, I'm talkin to you).

What was your approach to this week’s theme – “debris”?

This week's theme was exciting for me because I already compulsively shoot found garbage. "Mango" was the first in the Street Feast set to be shot. It was so beautiful and discarded--it set the tone for what I would seek out to complete the set. "Egg" is my favorite.

About Breukellen

Breukellen Riesgo was born, bred, and named after Brooklyn, making it hard for her to leave. She photographs people on the street when they aren't looking, stray cats, garbage, headshots for starving actors, her landlord's adorable children, and whatever else catches her eye. She'll gladly accept your hard-earned cash in exchange for a framed limited edition print, or for shooting your new and improved OKCupid photo. This was Breukellen's first time writing about herself in the third person, and it wasn't as bad as she thought it would be.
